Marissa will be flexible in supporting your treatment goals in line with your individual needs. Initially, fortnightly appointments are recommended. However, this can be tailored to suit individual needs and lifestyle, and therapy can be provided less regularly.
-
It is normal to have mixed feelings in the lead up to an initial session.
Many people also experience a range of emotions during their first session, but often a sense of relief of being able to tell their story. You do not have to spend time thinking about what to say or how to present your story, Marissa will help guide you.
The first session will focus on understanding who you are, what you’re struggling with, what you’d like life to look like as well and any other goals for coming to therapy. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about how Marissa works.
Typically, it can take up to two sessions to come to a place where a shared understanding and treatment plan is developed to reach your goals. A trauma-informed approach is taken to ensure you can leave your appointment feeling safe.
If you have any other questions about therapy, what it looks like, how it might help you, please don’t hesitate to contact Marissa.
-
Each person’s journey is unique and will be tailored to suit your individual needs. What happens in therapy sessions will differ depending on the therapy modality that is best suited to addressing your presenting problems and will always be guided by evidence based and collaborative planning between yourself and Marissa.
In general, therapy appointments will be structured with some time to reflect on what you have noticed between sessions and time to focus on creating change with developing new understanding and skills to help you react and respond in ways that is more aligned with what you truly want.
-
The amount of time required for therapy will be determined by your individual challenges, goals and what you are hoping to get out of attending.
Typically, the initial two sessions will be devoted to assessment, building a shared understanding and developing a treatment plan. This helps to better approximate length of therapy required to achieve your treatment goals.
-
Just yourself. Many clients like to bring notes that they may have made prior to the session or find it beneficial to take some notes during sessions. If you have any existing reports or assessments, you can bring these also.

Fees & Rebates

Marissa offers highly competitive fees for therapy sessions and charges significantly less than the rate recommended by the Australian Psychological Society (APS).
Medicare rebates are available with a Mental Health Care Plan.
For further details on current pricing structure and rebate amounts, please contact Marissa here.
Please note: Marissa is not currently accepting bulk billing clients.
-
You can see Marissa without a referral. However, if you are wanting to access Medicare rebates you will need a Mental Health Care Plan and referral from your GP.
-
A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a plan developed by your GP that helps you access treatment for a mental health condition. It allows you to receive a Medicare rebate for 10 psychology sessions each calendar year, making therapy more affordable.
Under a MHCP your initial referral will be for up to 6 sessions. Following the initial 6 sessions, you’ll need to return to see your GP to review progress and a further 4 sessions can then be approved. Your GP will then issue a second referral letter for these remaining sessions. This needs to be provided before your next appointment in order to access the Medicare rebate.
To get a MHCP:
Book an appointment with your GP — ask for a longer consultation so there’s enough time to discuss your mental health concerns.
During your appointment, your GP will talk with you about what’s been happening and, if appropriate, prepare a Mental Health Care Plan. This can be sent to Marissa with an accompanying referral letter via secure email or via the secure messaging service Medical Objects. Alternatively your GP may provide you with a physical copy which you can send through to Marissa or bring to your first session.
-
Marissa’s preferred payment method is via bank transfer following the session. You can pay by card however a small surcharge will be added through the transaction process.
If you are coming under a Mental Health Care Plan, payment is required in full directly following the session. Once payment is received, Marissa will be able to process your medicare rebate and the rebate amount will be deposited in the bank account that you have nominated with Medicare.
-
If you have private health insurance, you may be eligible for a rebate on psychological services. Please check with your private health fund for details, as rebates vary by provider and level of cover.
Marissa is unable to process private health rebates for you but will be able to provide an invoice receipt once payment is made to enable you to claim through your insurer.
Please note: You cannot claim from both Medicare and private health for the same session.
